Scan Quality: Trnio vs. Trnio Plus

Which device do you have? What kinds of things are you 3D scanning? What are you doing with your 3D scans?

These are all important questions to ask yourself when deciding whether to start your 3D scanning journey with Trnio or Trnio Plus. Keep reading to see which app is right for you!

Mesh Quality

The different processing algorithms in Trnio and Trnio Plus will affect the outcome of your scan quality, both with textures and without. See below to understand the differences and see which will better fit your scanning and 3D modeling needs.

Each of these models was processed with the same exact photoset. The Trnio model is on the left and Trnio Plus on the right.

Example 1: Older Photos

  • Trnio

Scan Processing through Trnio will consist of piecing your photos together. This will happen either with the photos on their own, or combined with ARKit technology provided with your Apple device. These models can come out smoother and with less detail than those from Trnio Plus, as your scan data is automatically compressed when uploaded to Trnio.

  • Trnio Plus

Trnio Plus processes your LiDAR, ARKit or Photo scan data through a more robust pipeline, and is able to provide more detail in the mesh underneath the textures, as seen here. Our updated algorithm helps to correctly align the small details in the scan data provided in order to produce more accuracy, both in terms of precision and real-life measurements.

Texture Quality

Trnio

Trnio Plus

Notice here the difference between the sharpness of the textures of these scans. Again, both of these scans were done with the same exact photoset, and processed though Trnio and Trnio Plus respectively. You can see the extra detail, sharpness and precision in the Trnio Plus version of this scan.

LiDAR vs. ARKit for Larger Scans

Trnio Plus LiDAR mode is our top recommendation for larger 3D scans with more data. With this mode, users can utilize the built-in LiDAR sensor on their devices that combines with our photogrammetry data and pipeline to bring you sharp and detailed scans that cover larger areas. These scans also provide real-life measurements that are accurate up to 1 cm.

Please note that LiDAR mode is only available on LiDAR-enabled devices, which include iPhones 12 and 13 Pro and the iPad Pro.

Trnio ARKit is the recommended method for users who are not yet subscribed to Trnio Plus. This method will capture areas or larger objects like this one, but provide less coverage and detail than our LiDAR option with Trnio Plus.

If you do not have a LiDAR-enabled device but would still like to capture larger areas or objects, we recommend trying out our ARKit option on Trnio Plus. This will allow for more scan data to be uploaded, and provide you with a more complete 3D model.
